Florida College is a small, regionally accredited, coeducational, non-denominational college located in the City of Temple Terrace, FL, eight miles northeast of the city of Tampa. Founded as a junior college in 1946, it was originally known as Florida Christian College. In 1954 the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools granted Florida College full accreditation for the Associate of Arts degree. Since it maintains no official connection with and accepts no direct contributions from any organized religious body, a vote by the students and staff resulted in dropping the word “Christian” from the school name in 1963. I enrolled at F.C. in 1972 and graduated in 1974 with an A.A. degree. The college added its first accredited four-year degree program, the Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies, in 1996. It has since added bachelor degrees in business, communication, elementary education, history, liberal studies, and music.
Making a Difference is a beautiful coffee table type book which presents in narratives, feature stories, and pictures, the first fifty years of Florida College. From its humble beginnings to the present with an optimistic look towards the future, it will inspire and delight the students, former students, and the casual reader. It includes approximately 275 pictures, both black and white and color. Some 75 different writers contributed the 105 sidebar stories which feature both individuals and special campus organizations and events. An appendix lists board members, administrators, and faculty who served during the fifty years, and contains lists of various categories of prominent students. Some even in “non-institutional” churches of Christ do not like Florida College. That is fine. It is certainly not the Lord’s church but simply a human institution and as such is imperfect. However, I still support the school.
